Current Subway access
The function of the public square is to provide basement level access to the public hall and to open up the subways and make them more user friendly and safe. It provides space for communal activities or events, and to eat and drink. The square will provide Stretford with a place of leisure and social interaction. It will serve a neutral ground for the emergence of conversation and thereby the birth of friendships based on the common ground of community.
Removal of ground to make use of as much area as possible
Implementing stairs that double as seating and ramps for disabled access without blocking subway access.
Replacing lost greenery - Plants beds and water feature/ pond. Both plant beds, pond and stairs are angled to direct views towards the pub to draw attention.
“Public squares are generally typified by its accessibility, often dominated by a landmark or a civic building” French, J.S. 1978
