Since the deindustrialisation of Amsterdam’s shipbuilding, Buiksloterham in the north, has been left for dereliction for decades. It is full of abandoned warehouses and shipyards, and has become an urban wasteland. Until recently, life and colour has been brought to the area through creativity. Students and self employed artists set up workshops and galleries within the warehouses, the most popular one names NDSM Werf. Increasingly more people are attracted to the area, bringing along cafes and restaurants, and places to stay.
This 1:5 moment of exchange depicts two art students struggling to shift a rowing boat, one they had found dumped along the harbour, across the NDSM ferry terminal. This moment highlights their determination and engagement in an art project, that reuses a found and futile object. The theme of this moment is to be carried through to my project : Bringing life to an area through the creativity of the community, but the recycling of whats already there.
